Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): Types, Causes, and Treatment Options

BCC is the most common form of skin cancer, arising from the basal cells in the skin. It typically appears as a pearly or waxy bump, often on sun-exposed areas like the face and neck.

Types

  • Nodular BCC: Raised, shiny lesions.
  • Superficial BCC: Flat, red, scaly patches.
  • Morpheaform BCC: Scar-like, firm lesions.

Causes

  • Chronic sun exposure.
  • Genetic predisposition.

Treatment Options

  • Surgical Excision: Removal of the tumor with a margin of healthy tissue.
  • Mohs Surgery: Precise removal to conserve tissue.
  • Topical Treatments: Imiquimod or fluorouracil for superficial BCC.
  • Radiation Therapy: For inoperable cases.
